Jim Orr went solo for the first time on January 17.
“Finding the opportunity to get him solo was difficult with strong winds and rising heat prevailing, day after day,” chief flying instructor Fred Nolan said.
“But eventually, at 07:15 on the 17th, off he went for his first flight as Pilot In Command, in the Jabiru J230D aircraft.”

Jim subsequently flew his second solo three days later.
The Jabiru is owned and operated by Jim’s father’s company, Pitman Deakin, based in Moree, where it is utilised in support of their stock and station agency.
Jim is a first year university student, studying architecture, and is at home for the summer break until February.
His ambition, weather permitting, is to have his pilot certificate by then. He then hopes to complete his Cross Country endorsement during future uni breaks.
Jim is the eldest son of well known Moree residents David and Mardi Orr.
