Commercial Albury Golf Club member Sam Bakes has fired a tournament-equalling best score of 67 to finish second in the prestigious Victorian Junior Amateur at The National Golf Club. The year 10 student shot a blistering five-under par 67 to finish even par (288) after the four-round tournament. Emerald Lakes Kai Komulainen won the event on two-under. Bakes' effort is even more meritorious given many of the players in the top 20 scored in the 70s or even 80s in the last round. The 15-year-old had made it difficult for himself in shooting 75 and 76 on the first two days. "I just played poorly and made a few sloppy errors, which led to a few double bogeys," he admitted. European Tour member Zach Murray has been giving Bakes some tips. ALSO IN SPORT: "He's just been helping me with the way I go about it, it's been good," he offered. Yarrawonga's Baxter Droop finished tied for eighth.
