Residents will begin to see a lot of activity around the Moree Central Business District (CBD) area over the next fortnight as council installs new signs in preparation to launch the 40 kilometres per hour (km/h) high pedestrian activity area.

Moree Plains Shire Council’s project engineer Syed Hasan said speed limits will be lowered from 50km/h to 40km/h within the Balo, Frome and Heber streets area of the Moree CBD only.
“The new signs and pavement markings indicating the new 40km/h zone will be installed to make Moree a more pedestrian friendly area, improving safety for children, seniors and cyclists,” Mr Hasan said.

The cost for the Moree high pedestrian activity area has been fully funded by the RMS to assist with managing speed and pedestrian safety as research shows that a pedestrian hit by a car travelling at 40km/h has twice the chance of surviving the collision than if the car was travelling at 50km/h.
“Pedestrians around shopping areas tend to be more distracted and even more so with mobile phone usage, therefore reducing the vehicle speed to less than 40km/h increases safety for everyone,” Mr Hasan said.
Works for the implementation of the Moree high pedestrian activity area are expected to be completed by Thursday, September 20 when the new 40km/h signage will be unveiled.
A variable message sign will be placed on the major approaches to the Moree CBD to notify motorists of the changed road conditions.
