Moree Secondary College year 10 students are currently completing work experience with local businesses around the community, gaining valuable knowledge about what it’s like to be a part of the workforce.

Moree Plains Shire Council this week has taken in two students, Grace Carter and Jessica Chittenden to give them the opportunity to experience working in local government.
Grace, who will be at the council for two weeks is completing her work experience in the planning and development department.
“It’s been good,” Grace said
“I’ve been able to do things I’ve never done before.”

Jessica, who is completing this week at the council in the records department will then move into something a little different when next week she goes to the Moree Tourist Information Centre.
Like Grace, she has also enjoyed the experience so far.
“I’ve learnt something new everyday and I didn’t even need any previous skills when I came, I was able to pick it up straight away,” Jessica said.
Both of the girls have previously done work experience, (Grace at Moree Public School and Jessica at the Moree Art Gallery) but said they have thoroughly enjoyed their experience at council so far.
The practical side has been the most rewarding for both girls, as they can see what their jobs are really about.
“If I was to sit in a classroom and have someone tell me about it I wouldn’t find it as interesting, whereas by actually doing it I’ve been able to enjoy and appreciate it more,” Jessica said.
During a short trip to a house in Ashley, Grace was able to understand the importance of fine details such as measurements in planning and development.
In the future Grace isn’t thinking of a career path such as planning and development but she does have an interest in teaching, law and counselling. Although she can’t see herself doing planning and development in the future she does believe it is good to do something different as it gives you an idea and picture about something that you normally wouldn’t consider.
On the other hand, Jessica is and has been interested in doing work with council for a while now.
Although her complete interest doesn’t lie within records what she is doing now it is very similar to administration work which she has been considering. Business and administration work is something she hopes to do in the future, which has been sparked by growing up watching what her mum does.
“I’ve been going there [NSW government offices in Moree] since well before I was born,” Jessica said.
Both girls believe work experience is important and valuable as it not only allows them to grow outside the classroom but also gives them insight knowledge into future careers paths they may want to pursue.
Grace and Jessica are both thankful of Moree Plains Shire Council and Jessica Johnston for giving them the opportunity to learn and experience the work the council does within our community.
