Liam Fenton is one of the 32 students participating in the work experience program.
During his placement at Harvey Norman, Liam has been busy filling stock and selling phone cases, ink and other basic electronic needs.
“I like my work experience so far, as I wanted to work with video games and I want experience as a salesman,” Liam said.
“This week I started learning about the new brands coming in store, how to fix minor electronics and how to sell the products to the customers. It’s really great to work here.”
Harvey Norman franchisee Chris Smyth believes the three weeks of experience Liam is undergoing is providing him with the essential skills needed to be a salesman.
“It is a great initiative for the school to expose their students to the workforce,” Mr Smyth said.
“The work experience teaches students personal skills and confidence; it’s teaching Liam how a team operates and how he can contribute to that team.
“Everyday is different, and Liam is learning how to be proactive, to think on his feet, provide solutions and to problem solve.”
Meanwhile, fellow year 10 student Victoria Smith has been learning the tricks of the trade of hairdressing this past week during her work experience at Deft Hair, Moree.
Victoria hopes to become a hairdresser when she finishes school, so Deft Hair was the perfect choice for her two weeks of work experience.
“I’m learning the skills and social experience needed for that from Cloe,” she said.
Supervisor Cloe Hall said work experience is a great way for Victoria to get a taste of the hairdressing industry before committing to full-time employment.
“Work experience provided me, when I was a student, good experience,” she said.
“It also created good contacts that I benefitted from.”
Other students are completing work experience at Moree East Public School, Beauty Matters, Wise Words and Fairview Retirement Village, to name a few.
