Ratepayers will be left to pick up the bill after someone dumped rubbish between Manildra Grain and the Halls Creek crossing recently, Moree Plains Shire Council says.
Environment and compliance manager Dane Graham said the council already spent more than $200,000 each financial year to clean up illegally dumped waste.
“The degradation of the environment through illegal dumping costs ratepayers thousands and thousands of dollars every year – money that could be better spent on our sporting fields, parks and roads,” he said.
“Council is serious about catching people dumping rubbish, and we are reviewing the CCTV footage … but welcome any anonymous information so the matter can be investigated.”
People caught dumping rubbish could receive a fine from $2000 to $4000; corporations from $4000 to $8000.
Incidents can be reported to the Environmental Protection Authority on 131 555 or the council on 6757 3222.
