James Douglas Kessell pleads guilty to firearm and 350 rounds of ammunition in roadside search near Narrabri

THE DRIVER of a car containing a firearm and hundreds of rounds of ammunition has pleaded guilty to all charges at his first court appearance.

James Douglas Kessell fronted Moree Local Court the day after he was pulled over by police on the Kamilaroi Highway near Narrabri.

Kessell was charged with possession of an unauthorised firearm; possession of an unregistered firearm; possession of ammunition without a licence; acquiring a firearm subject to a prohibition order and acquiring ammunition subject to a prohibition order.

He pleaded guilty to all five charges and was formally refused bail by magistrate Roger Prowse on Wednesday.

He will return to court in Moree later this month for sentencing.

The gun and more than 350 rounds of ammunition were seized by police after Kessell's vehicle was stopped on the Kamilaroi Highway near Narrabri.

The 53-year-old driver was charged after Oxley Police District officers pulled his car over about 10:30am on Tuesday as part of proactive patrols.
