Moree Plains Shire Council's acting director of engineering Alan Lawrance said the smart meter water readers are an advanced piece of technology for water conservation.
"Once this final round of installation is completed, households will be able to track water consumption of their own property via the online customer portal and use this information to conserve their water usage and budget their water bills," he said.
"The new technology will also enable council to pinpoint leaks within the network and potentially identify mains breaks before they escalate and cause customer disruptions."

Contractors will be knocking on the door to notify residents of the installation commencing on their property and will leave a flyer in the mailbox or at the premises once installation is complete.
Residents will experience a short 20-minute interruption to their water supply while the smart water meters are being installed.
Households that experience any issues with their water pressure following the installation of a new smart water meter are encouraged to report the problem to council and an employee will come and assess the issue.
Following completion of the installation of smart meters throughout the shire, residents will be provided with instructions on how to register for the customer portal and access and monitor their own water usage.
If access to the property is restricted on the day of installation, council's contractor will be in touch to make arrangements for the meter to be installed at a later date.
