Throughout the week, more than 200 people have been fed at barbecues at Jellicoe Park, Sullivans Place, Apex Park and Kirkby Park.

Byamee manager Jo Williams said that Anti-Poverty Week is an annual United Nations event, with the barbecues in Moree now in its fourth year.

"This year they're focusing on trying to lobby governments to raise the basic Newstart Allowance, that way people can actually live off it," she said.

"Poverty is one of the main causes of homelessness. Poverty also leads to mental health issues and self esteem issues."

Ms Williams said the barbecues were a way to raise awareness about all the local services the town has to offer.

"It's important our local people know they can walk into any local service and be helped," Ms Williams said.

At the barbecue, Pius X also had a medical tent set up, doing free medical checks, including blood tests and diabetes checks.

Ms Williams wanted to thank the volunteers who have been helping cook barbecues all week.
