ABORIGINAL students across the region studying an undergraduate nursing or midwifery degree at university are being urged to apply for the NSW government’s Health Aboriginal Nursing and Midwifery Cadetship Program.

Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall said the program provided financial support and assistance to students undertaking an undergraduate nursing or midwifery degree at university.
Mr Marshall said he’d love to see students from the region apply and receive support from the program.
“The aim of the program is to increase the number of Aboriginal nurses and midwives working in NSW health facilities,” he said.
“Nurses and midwives are critical to the success of our healthcare sector and it’s great to see the support there to help provide these opportunities for Aboriginal people to undertake nursing and midwifery education.”
“Opportunities are there for graduates, so we encourage Aboriginal students to utilise this financial support and assistance so they can focus on completing their nursing and midwifery studies.”
Successful cadets in the program will receive:
- A study allowance of $600 each fortnight while undertaking a university nursing or midwifery degree;
- A $500 support allowance each semester;
- Access to an Aboriginal mentor, cadet coordinator and additional clinical support; and
- Up to 12 weeks of paid employment in a local public hospital or Justice Health facility.
NSW Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer Jacqui Cross said Aboriginal people who were interested in a career in nursing or midwifery and wanted to make a real difference to the health of their communities were encouraged to apply.
“The NSW Government is committed to growing our Aboriginal nursing and midwifery workforce, and cadetships provide valuable additional support to Aboriginal students undertaking nursing and midwifery studies at university,” she said.
