The Quick Shear and auction event, to be held at the Garah Hotel this Saturday, May 19, is the brainchild of local shearer Zach Mather who came up with the idea as a way to raise money for the Garah Community Fundraiser.
“I wanted to do it to raise money for the Garah community,” he said.
“My grandma Mary, her sister Pat, and Maureen started the Garah Community Fundraiser in 2007, where they get money together and if someone gets sick in the community we give them $500 or $1,000 just to help them out.
“We did a couple of trivia nights and thought this was something new. I put the idea out there and they said yes.”
The timed event will require competitors to shear one sheep, with the fastest times making it through to the finals.
The top six shearers will compete in the final, during which they’ll need to shear two sheep and the fastest time will win.
There’s $2,000 prize money up for grabs in the open section, $800 for the intermediate winner and prizes in local categories.
Shearers from all over the region are expected to travel to Garah to compete.
“Anyone can enter,” Mr Mather said.
“The open category is for more experienced shearers. Some of them will do a sheep in 20 seconds or less. There’s a few out there that are pretty quick.”
Competitors can nominate up until 4.30pm on Saturday. Cost to participate is $50 for the open and $25 for the intermediate.
The event will also feature an auction and raffles, with all prizes donated by generous local businesses.
There will also be a jumping castle for the kids, a barbecue and a DJ playing into the night.
Mr Mather said it will be a great family night out.
“A lot of people don’t know anything about sheep and have never seen one shorn,” he said.
“It’ll be a good night, a good atmosphere. It’ll be good for something different.”
All money raised through nominations and the auction will go straight to the Garah Community fund to help locals in need.
The event will get underway from 5pm.
There will be a return bus running from Moree. The bus will leave the Royal Hotel at 4pm and will return when the last sheep has been shorn. To book a seat please call Bill on 0448 203 621.
