With one in four Australians expected to suffer from hearing loss by 2050, Discount Drug Stores has partnered with Australia’s leading independent provider of hearing healthcare products and services, National Hearing Care, to offer free hearing checks recommended for adults aged over 50 years.
An estimated 3.6 million Australians are already impacted by hearing loss, costing the economy $15.9 billion due to early retirement and decreasing productivity.
Discount Drug Store pharmacies want to highlight the everyday activities that can lead to hearing decline and help Australians manage and recognise the importance of their hearing health before it impacts their quality of life.
Pharmacist and National Professional Services Manager, Stephenie Shea, said hearing loss cases can arise from highly preventable actions.
“Hearing loss is the second most common health condition Australians suffer from, after musculoskeletal disease,” Ms Shea said.
“Hearing loss and impairment can occur at any age. However, as we get older, the incidence for hearing loss increases with age, affecting over half of Australians aged 60 years and over”.
“Many people won’t notice diminished hearing because it occurs gradually over time, and every day activities including continued exposure to loud noises can be a key contributor. Early intervention will train your ears and set you up for more effective treatment and better hearing later in life.”
Hearing is often an overlooked aspect of healthcare with most people waiting an average of seven years before they seek treatment.
“We want all Australians to know regular testing can significantly reduce your chances of hearing impairment and ensures actions can be put in place to minimise chances of diminished hearing,” Ms Shea said.
“Qualified hearing experts can offer patients advice on next steps, any required technology and ongoing maintenance tips to help improve hearing.”
The Moree store will be running the free hearing clinic on Thursday, October 19.
The 15-minute checks will be conducted by qualified National Hearing Care hearing experts and involves a simple listening test via headphones in a controlled environment. Bookings are essential.
