Teams from Moree, Toomelah, Boggabilla, Inverell, Walgett, Collarenebri and Wee Waa will travel to the small village to compete in the games.
Stephanie Duke of Pius-X Aboriginal Corporation said the idea flourished from an inter-agency meeting where two Mungindi Elders approached her with an idea.
“Obviously Pius is a health service and we promote being physically active and social to improve all-round health so we got to work to organise the event with some local Elders,” she said.
Moree have nominated two teams of Elders in the Olympics and Mungindi’s team has already started training hard for the big day.
Ms Duke said more than 200 people were expect to attended the games at the Mungindi hall.
There was a launch day in Mungindi on Monday to announce the official details of the 2017 Olympics.
Christine Brown, a previous competitor for Inverell spoke about her experience.
“It’s all about fun and there is absolutely no running allowed,” she laughed.
“We were part of Inverell’s team and we won, we didn’t mean to but we did and I am very glad to see the Olympics being held in Mungindi this year.”
Moree Plains Shire Council and Pius have organised special trophies and a shield for the winners of the event, who will host next year’s Elders Olympics.
Mungindi Central School have jumped on board to help organise and run the day.
Representing the school, Belinda Brosnan said the event was a great way to promote health and movement for all ages.
“All of the Elders here in Mungindi support our school especially when we are fighting for funding or other things so this is our way of saying thanks and giving support and respect to our Elders,” she said.
Games will involved throwing, hand-eye coordination, ball skills and much more, testing all aspects.
Elders across the district have started training for the 2017 Olympics, so don’t miss the action head out to Mungindi on June 23 and show your support for our local Elders.
