To be held at Moree Town Hall on Saturday October 13, the Catholic Debutante Ball will be going back to tradition, and will be open to Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal girls from Moree aged between 16 and 19 who have no children.
Piux X board member Jess Duncan said Pius has held debutante balls in the past, but has never had a Catholic one.
“Pius X has a rich Catholic heritage and we are seeking to keep this strong by revitalising the tradition of a Catholic Debutante within the Moree community,” she said.
“Pius was founded by the Daughters of Charity and it is called Pius X after the Pope; it’s entrenched in the tradition of Catholicism.”

Ms Duncan said the board has received a lot of support to hold the debutante ball from the local Catholic pastoral committee and have even been blessed by Bishop Michael Kennedy.
“We are humbled that the Most Reverend Bishop Michael Kennedy has given us his blessing and is praying for the success of the event,” she said.
Aboriginal elder, chair of the Pius X Chapel committee and staunch Catholic woman, Eileen Cain, has been a driving influence behind the Catholic Deb Ball.
In the spirit of reconciliation, the event has been opened up to both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal girls.
“We’ve had lots of interest from girls and their friends wanting to do it,” Ms Duncan said.
“We’ve already got more than a dozen girls who have put their name down.”
Ms Duncan said making your debut is a special moment in a young girl’s life.
“I made my debut and so did my mum,” she said.
“It’s a really enjoyable thing you get to do with your female friends and cousins; it’s that coming out moment in your life when you’re on the precipice of womanhood.”
Leading up to the ball, the debutantes will need to select a partner and participate in dance lessons.
