Founded on the philosophy of 'paying it forward', The Big Lift is a UTS student-run, volunteer organisation that takes eighty students on a nine-day bus trip through regional Australia to complete various volunteering projects.
These include painting, gardening, cleaning and simple construction/deconstruction tasks. With a focus on community engagement, The Big Lift works closely with towns across the country to provide help where it is needed.
"The Big Lift gives students a unique experience to discover how simple and rewarding volunteering is to help out the wider community," The Big Lift president Melissa Jimenez said.
"The aim of the trip is to demonstrate the idea that if we all come together for a great cause, real change can be achieved."
On its 10th anniversary trip, The Big Lift will visit Moree as part of its trip across regional New South Wales and Queensland.
The Big Lift buses will arrive in Moree on Monday, July 8 and depart on Tuesday, July 9.
During their time in Moree, the students will complete work at Cooee Park and the south Moree housing estate, which will involve painting a mural, replacing a mosaic, trimming and cleaning the park and pinning a fence that has started to fall over.
"The Big Lift aims to help create global citizens that are socially conscious and empowered to be a part of things they want to see changed," Ms Jimenez said.
"I've seen so many students do great things for their community after being inspired by the volunteering projects they participated in on past trips," town organiser Gena Cao said.
"In a generation that has every potential to become positively connected with the world, The Big Lift plays an essential role in building that sense of community."
UTS students will depart Sydney on Saturday, July 6 with their trip spanning over nine days. The Big Lift is sponsored by University of Technology, University of Technology Faculty of Health, Activate Clubs, Travelsafe and ResMed.
