Country Labor candidate for Northern Tablelands Debra O'Brien applauded the Labor Party's announcement to deal with what she says has become a "major crisis" in Moree.
"This is one of the proudest days of my life," she said.
"The Labor Party is firmly committed to providing shelter and emergency accommodation in Moree."
Ms O'Brien recently invited Labor's Shadow Minister for Domestic Violence and Women, Jenny Aitchison, to visit Moree with her to discuss the issue with various stakeholders.

"We were appalled by what was revealed in our fact-finding discussions with local stakeholders, including Justice Health," she said.
"We discovered there's a lack of emergency accommodation for children and youth whose homes are too dangerous or for young people who need somewhere to stay en route from juvenile justice. There is no temporary emergency accommodation. Part of this is a lack of transport to other towns in the region, part of it is a result of ice addiction of parents.
"Jenny and I agreed that it was quite unacceptable for this problem to be endemic in Moree and also of such a longstanding nature.
"So, naturally, I am thrilled that Jenny has discussed the results of our fact-finding visit with her colleagues, especially Clayton Barr, the Shadow Minister for Finance, who had also come to Moree with me, and they decided that enough was enough."
Ms O'Brien said that the commitment by Labor to fund adequate emergency housing in Moree will be a major boost to some of the most disadvantaged people in our region.
"Shelter is about as fundamental as it gets," she said.
"This shows again how much Labor cares for ordinary people, unlike our opponents who seem to do the bidding of only the big end of town.
"Having been born and bred in Moree, I am absolutely thrilled to be doing something positive for my town.
"And I can assure the people of Moree that the scope of this new accommodation will be decided by the various local stakeholders. Community consultation will be central to this process."
