Moree young people had the opportunity to have their say on what they’d like to see when headspace comes to town later this year.

The event at Moree Skate Park on Thursday afternoon allowed young people aged 12 to 25 to provide feedback to headspace ahead of the organisation’s arrival in Moree in July this year.
“It’s a youth consultation around what headspace could be for Moree,” headspace Tamworth’s youth and community engagement officer Avril Oakley-Hollow said.
“It’s an opportunity for young people to come together with headspace and have some fun, and lets us collect some information.”
At the event at the skate park, Moree’s youth had the opportunity to write their thoughts on a skate board deck about what they think headspace coming will mean to them. There was also giant jenga and plenty of information handed out.
While plans for Moree’s outreach site have not yet been finalised, the headspace services will be co-located within Centacare Moree.
There will be someone from headspace permanently based in Moree offering counselling services, while young people will have access to the rest of headspace’s services via their telehealth service.
Headspace provides young people with a range early intervention services, spanning general health, mental health and wellbeing, alcohol and other drug problems, education, employment and other services.
“We have a host of services that branch out of just mental health,” Ms Oakley-Hollow said.
Moree has been wanting a headspace facility for sometime and Ms Oakley-Hollow is confident that the outreach service will be well utilised when it comes to town.
“Moree needs people that are well that stay in the community which will create more opportunities later on for all young people,” she said.
Centacare Moree’s Lisa Moore said with a lack of youth services in Moree, headspace will help fill a gap, providing a safe place for young people to talk to someone.
“It’s just for basic skills, all different skills, and having someone to talk to,” she said.
“We have ongoing grief and loss in Moree and that impacts on young people’s wellbeing,” Centacare’s Liz Taylor added.
It’s expected headspace will arrive in Moree sometime in July.
