During her travels throughout the electorate Ms O’Brien heard first-hand of the anguish of families as well as the lack of services provided for drug rehabilitation in targeted areas of the Northern Tablelands electorate, particularly Moree.
“Moree, a town that is well known to be struggling with the ice epidemic, is an example of how the LNP State Government are not addressing issues when or where they appear,” she said.
“Moree has not one bed for rehabilitation of people with addictions to the drug ice.”
Recently, Ms O’Brien met with NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley in Moree and discussed the local impacts of the ice epidemic at length after hearing about the problems confronting the community first-hand.
“Issues such as the lack of rehabilitation facilities is a major concern for the Moree community.
“Last week Luke Foley convened a roundtable discussion where he was briefed by emergency and health workers about the impact of the ice epidemic,” she said.
“We need a whole-of-government approach to the rise of new drugs like ice and a drugs summit will produce evidence-based solutions that we can implement,” Mr Foley said.
“Good on Luke Foley for addressing this issue last week and announcing that if Labor is elected on March 28 he will host a 21st century Drugs Summit as one of Labor’s first priorities,” Ms O’Brien said.
“I don’t want NSW to be the ice capital of Australia.
“Pursuing innovative solutions and preventing the destruction of lives will be a top priority of a Foley Labor Government.”
