The approval was for the enclosure of a covered existing area, however due to a technical non-compliance issue, was unable to be approved by council staff.
Specialist flooding advice was sought to assess the application prior to taking it to the meeting for councillors’ determination.
The enclosed room will now be able to be used as an activity venue for the group.
According to deputy mayor, Sue Price, Mungindi HACC has been highly active in the community and provides multiple social activities for senior citizens. However extensions to the current building were sought due to difficulties in finding appropriate venues and the need to constantly move equipment in order to host the events.
“I wish HACC all the best and lots of fun and merriment for activities planned, which I’m sure they will have,” she said.
The extensions were sought as due to climatic conditions, the existing area was unusable.
Mungindi HACC will now be able to use the area as a function room with conveniences and amenities for attendees and allowing for a more permanent arrangement, providing facilities and services to meet the day to day needs of the residents.
The applicant, Katherine McMillan, provided councillors with a passionate written explanation as to why approval for the application was necessary as presented by councillor Price.
The benefits for the physical, social and cultural welfare of community members will be numerous from this new room.
The council approved the application noting the benefits it would provide to Mungindi users and the community.
