This initiative is one that has flow-on benefits, not only for the recipient but the wider community.
Regional communities like ours are seriously struggling to attract and retain medical professionals, especially multi-skilled persons who can assist across many different facets needed in rural areas.
Not only is our population aging but so are our trained professionals, and not just our doctors, but our tradies, our bookkeepers and everyone else too!
We need to train our young people to be multi-skilled, to be the best at what they do.
And we need to show them living in a regional community can have many benefits.
Sadly, most of our young people leave home, and their local communities, many not returning until a lot later in life, if ever.
But the youth are our future!
We need them to survive.
The WK Hunter scholarship is just one example of how we are showing local ‘kids’ how great it is to live and work in our communities. And hopefully these students will want to return when they complete university, to work in local businesses, to raise a family and be involved in a great rural community.
The Champion is often a great starting point or learning curve for journos who too go off to live the big dream of being in the city or at the beach.
But there isn’t a better place to learn all the tricks of the trade; not just one round, but every aspect of the newspaper.
With a young editor and journos it’s a team who are constantly learning, but who are doing all they can to improve their skills and serve the community!
