With 40 trillion bacteria living in the gut, HealthWISE dietitian Sammy Humphries is keen to teach the Mungindi community how simple dietary changes can make that bacteria thrive.
"I don't know if many people really understand the link between having good gut health and good overall health," Sammy said.
She noted that many depression sufferers also struggle with digestive problems.
"It's definitely easier than people realise (to improve your gut health)," she said.
Sammy said the quality of an individual's diet is fundamentally linked to their overall gut health, and argued that it is still possible to eat good food on a budget.
At the talk, she will give participants an overview of how the gut works, common bacteria-related problems and why gut bugs are so important. Practical solutions to digestive problems, the links between gut health and disease and how to have better gut bugs will be discussed.
Sammy is looking forward to sharing her expertise with the community and said she was proud to be part of a free service which reaches isolated rural areas.
"I love it so much. People are wanting to engage and it's a really good chance to talk to a group of people in the community about optimising their health through food," she said.
Free health checks and a 'gut friendly' lunch will be on offer for the Tuesday, August 27 event. It will be held at the Mungindi Town Hall from 11am to 2pm. RSVPs are required by Friday, August 23 for catering purposes, by calling Casey Orcher on (04) 2777 4036.
A similar event will be held in the Garah CWA rooms on October 23.
