Seventeen-year-old Rayshaun Carr, who grew up in Moree, and Jaylen Close (16) from Toowoomba were killed in a single vehicle accident at Wyaga Creek on the Gore Highway, about 35 kilometres north of Goondiwindi, on April 21, 2018.
The car the pair had been driving in had allegedly been stolen from Perigan Springs on the Sunshine Coast.
About a month after the crash, the families of both teenagers began their campaign for answers into the deaths of Rayshaun and Jaylen.
A spokesperson for the Carr family said not only were they disappointed by a lack of communication by the police at the time, but the circumstances surrounding their deaths "didn't add up".
"We didn't think much of it at the time, but then we started asking questions and none of it was adding up," the spokesperson said.
"It made us think there was more to it."
The spokesperson said family members had spoken with a truck driver and staff at a 24-hour service station south of Millmerran, who believe the car the boys were driving in was being followed at high speed by a black car.
The lack of answers provided to both families prompted them to question Queensland and NSW Police, which was the motivation behind a march and protest outside Moree Police Station in February this year. Not getting the answers they were hoping for, the families requested a coronial inquest.
Late last month, that request was granted, with a pre-inquest hearing set for August 26.
The Carr family spokesperson said the family was "relieved" that an inquest was finally happening.
"We just want answers," they said.
"We want to know what the police know. We want to know the cause of Rayshaun's death because we didn't get to identify him, we didn't see his body.
"We want justice.
"We look forward to receiving answers, we look forward to resting the soul of Rayshaun."
