The Magpies surged to second with another win on Sunday against the Narwan Eels in their final away game of the regular season. A sluggish first-half against Narwan saw the Magpies just in front 24-14 at half-time.
In the second session, the visitors found the form which has earned them the best defensive record in the competition and flew home for a 54-14 win.
Magpies captain-coach Nick Say conceded his team’s first 40 minutes were below par.
“We didn't switch on liked we talked about and they came out firing, which we knew they would,” he said.
“We just didn't turn up really. It was their home ground, their last home game for the year and we probably didn't give them enough credit and they need it.
“We talked about it at half-time and I thought our second-half was a lot better which was good.”
Say credited his team’s defence for once again helping them land the win.

“That is what we have been working on all year – we said if we can hold our defence then our attack can come off the back of that which works out pretty well,” he said.
“We have plenty of points in us which is good so if we can work on our d [defence] then everything else comes off the back of that.”
The Magpies take on the top-of-the-table Moree Boomerangs at Mead Park this Sunday for their final home game of the regular season.
If the Glen Innes side win, it will cement their spot in the top two on the table.
“It will be a tough game to finish the season with but we are looking forward to it. We have been talking about that game for a couple of weeks now,” Say said.
“I think we are second after today's [Sunday] game, after the draw yesterday [between Moree Boars and Inverell] which helped us but we will have to come out next week because it will decide where we finish.”
