Close to 280 people dressed in their finest floor-length ball gowns and black bow ties for the evening of Hollywood glamour, with the Boomi Memorial Hall transformed into a lavish venue made for the stars, complete with luxurious red carpet and paparazzi.
Boomi Ball organising committee member Sam Noon said the inaugural event was an outstanding success, going off with a boom in Boomi.
“It was a fantastic night and the committee has been blown away by the support the Ball has received in its first year,” Ms Noon said.
“It was a massive social success for the town of Boomi, attracting close to 280 ball go-ers.”
In keeping with the Hollywood glamour theme, the night included ‘Oscars’ for the best dressed ‘stars’.
Mel Smith won the Best Dressed Lady, Owen Webb was crowned Best Dressed Gentleman, Georgie Brown impressed the judges winning Best Dressed Classic Lady, Andrew and Bess O’Connor took out the Best Dressed Couple award and Robyn Ticehurst had the Best Hollywood Pose.
Guests were treated to canapes, a delicious main meal and decadent desserts featuring produce from around the region, created by local chefs Kate Goodhew and Toby Osmond.
The Boomi Tennis Club ran the bar on the night, while local band ‘The Local Lot’ provided the entertainment and had the crowd dancing the night away.
The main event of the evening was a charity auction of goods generously donated by local businesses.
All funds raised on the night will go to the Boomi and Garah branches of the Gwydir Mobile Children’s Service.
With this the only fundraiser for the two preschools for two years, funds raised will contribute to the general operational costs of the preschool, as well as the purchase of new equipment and resources for the children.
While a total figure is yet to be finalised, the committee hopes to use the money to purchase storage facilities for learning resources, shading and upgrading play area surfaces and planting memorial trees at both venues.
“We are very happy with the amount raised,” Ms Noon said.
“It surpassed our expectations and we are totally blown away with the generosity of the community.”
The committee would like to extend their thanks to all of the sponsors, donors and volunteers who made the night possible.
Plans are already underway for the next Ball to be held in two years time.
