Both groups will receive $3,000 each from funds raised at the 11th annual golf day, held on Thursday, May 18.
In the 11 years since the memorial golf day has been running, a total of $47,000 has been raised, the majority of which has been donated to the Moree Cancer Support Group.
Over the years, Moree Cancer Support Group has used the money to purchase equipment to help local cancer patients such as special mattresses, beds, equipment for homes, and more.
This year’s donation will go towards the purchase of new treatment chairs for the hospital.
“The cancer support group have been very grateful for the money given to them to supply this equipment,” Moree Cancer Support Group’s Val McLennan said.
“The Ken Slack Memorial Golf Day has been our main donor.”
This year Moree Hospital Obstetrics was also chosen to receive $3,000 which will go towards the purchase of a state-of-the-art spa bath for their birthing room.
“A birthing bath is for water births and will allow us to do water immersions,” maternity unit manager Barbara Schultz said.
“It’s a very expensive operation, so every little bit helps.”
The memorial golf day honours the late Ken Slack, a Moree farmer who sadly passed away after a battle with lung cancer.
Ken’s wife Joclyn said it’s great to give back to the community.
“This money will be helping at the start of life, and also at the other end of life,” she said.
About 100 players from all over NSW and QLD participated in this year’s four-person Ambrose golf day, organised by Moree Veteran Golfers Group.
“Each year we get about 100 players, it’s always been well supported,” Moree Veteran Golfers Group treasurer Peter Gough said.
“We’ve had a lot of good sponsors.”
Unfortunately, this year was the last Ken Slack Memorial Golf Day, however instead of cutting the event for good, the veterans golfers will continue to run an annual fundraising memorial day, which will instead honour past members.
