Show society president, Brendan Munn, said with the help of a grant from Member for Parkes Mark Coulton the society purchased twin, timber display cabinets illuminated with LED lighting to show a range of WWI memorabilia.
In the week leading up to the show secretary, Karen Munn, has been in charge of sorting the various display items and preparing a room in the new pavilion for show-goers to view.
“We had a lot of things given to us for the display from Nell Jones and there are some very interesting items. We’ve got everything from jumpers, uniforms and cigarette lighters to diaries, books, medals and many, many photos,” she said.
One piece, Mrs Munn holds close to her heart, is a framed photograph, dog tag and medals of her great grandfather’s, Jones McLaughlin, who fought in the trenches at France for the entire war.
“Our cousins had this one so they’ve lent it to us to put on display.” Also on display will be photos taken by a local nurse Sister Woods who is related to the Woods family in Moree.
“She went to Egypt and took a heap of photos, and her grandson has allowed us to blow them up, so they’ll be up all around the room,” Mrs Munn said.
Mr Munn said along with the display, there would be many more events commemorating WWI.
“We’ve included the Anzac Day centenary into a lot of our activities and themes. There’ll be a competition woodchop, horse drawn carriages with heavy harnesses and horse teams pulling logs, which are just a few events commemorating the war years,” she said.
The Moree show will begin at 12 noon on Saturday following local Anzac Day services.
If anyone would like to donate or lend something visit the show’s website, www.moreeshow.com.au, and go to the contact tab where you will find Mr and Mrs Munn’s contact details.
“People will need to have their various items to me probably by Wednesday so I can have it all ready to go before the show begins on Friday night,” Mrs Munn said.
