Montgomery’s father, Mike, said he travelled to Sydney last weekend to play a round-robin style competition which featured one 50-over match and two 20-over cricket games.
“Paddy is a bowler who can bat but once you get to this level you have to specialise in one thing, so Paddy’s bowling has been the focus.
“After travelling to Auburn, we returned home and it had been 24 hours so we just assumed, without hearing anything, that he didn’t make it in,” he said.
The family decided to check the CCC website, where it was stated Montgomery had made the side.
“We had just resigned to the fact he hadn’t been chosen and so when we saw that he had we were all really shocked, excited and extremely proud of him,” Mike said.
Montgomery will have the weekend to show his bowling skills in the hope to be selected for the Under 15s NSW All Schools Cricket team which will play in Darwin during the winter.
“During our time in Aubrey we learnt how competitive the level really was.
“We saw the kids from Combined High School (CHS) and Combined Independent School (CIS) and they are extremely talented,” Mike said.
Montgomery will be competing against cricketers from CCC, CHS and CIS to be chosen for the team.
“Paddy has certainly worked hard to get to where he is.
“He has been playing in the local senior cricket competition with the Colts and last winter he was a part of the NSW Cricket Academy,” he said.
Mike said Montgomery was the youngest cricketer on the NSW CCC team.
“He is virtually the youngest, his six foot tall and he is tiny compared to the other players but he has some serious talent and we are hoping he gets chosen. Regardless we are very proud,” Mike said.
Montgomery said he was “stoked” when he saw the CCC website selection list.
“I’m not hoping to accomplish anything in particular, I’m just going to try and perform to the best of my ability and hopefully that will be enough,” he said.
The family will travel to Auburn at the weekend to prepare for a big two days of cricket on Monday and Tuesday.
