The Byamee sleep-out is a chance for locals to sleep similar to how a homeless person would each night, according to manager Leigh Smith.
“We thought it would be a great idea to run an event before the ‘hike for homeless’ on August 3. Anyone can be involved in the sleep-out and there will be lots to do on the night,” he said.
“There will be a barbecue, kids activities such as face painting, cupcake decorating and a colouring-in corner. We’ll also have some information about homelessness around Australia and Moree, and an electronic display,” Mr Smith said.
Byamee will have sleeping bags available to rent out for the night, or there is an option to bring your own.
“People don’t have to sleep out but it would be a good opportunity to realise that local people battle the cold weather every night, sometimes without a sleeping bag,” he said.
There will be ‘hike for homeless’ merchandise for sale, along with raffle tickets where you can go in the draw to win a Mitsubishi Mirage .
Byamee’s main event for the year, the hike for homeless, will see locals hiking from Moree to Narrabri, Gunnedah, Tamworth, Armidale, Glen Innes, Inverell and back to Moree.
“It is up to each individual how far they want to walk and it will outline that in the packages. You can also choose where (location-wise) you want to hike,” Mr Smith said.
Registration forms for individuals and groups wanting to hike need to be completed as soon as possible.
“We’re also launching discount cards for locals. The cards will be for sale for $10 and businesses participating choose what discount they would like to offer those with the cards. The more businesses onboard, the better it will be for shoppers,” he said.
The cards will sell and be valid for the month of August.
The sleep-out will be held at Byamee, 294 Warialda Street, starting at 6pm.
