New England Police District officers were called to the scene at 11am on Tuesday after reports human skeletal remains had been found.

After arriving at the river bank, police closed off the area to the public and set up a crime scene.

Police then began a widespread search of the river and nearby land area at 9am on Wednesday.

The crime scene will remain in place as police continue their search.

Police have launched an investigation into the discovery.

The remains have been sent off for forensic investigation.
