The Northern Daily Leader is celebrating the 200-year anniversary of explorer John Oxley reaching the Peel River in Tamworth.
The city is now gearing up to celebrate the bicentenary of European Tamworth, after Oxley entered into the ancient lands of the Kamilaroi, accompanied by his competent deputy George William Evans with a party of 14, largely convicts, together with 19 pack-horses, on September 2, 1818.
The Leader has nearly finished it’s 200 Faces of Tamworth campaign, highlighting various people in the community who make our city what it is.
On top of that, this weekend there will be a feature article highlighting some of the weird and wacky historical quirks we’ve found in Tamworth’s history.
Some of the above photos date back to the 1930s, and include historic moments in the city’s history, such as the opening of the Bridge Street bridge in 1965 and the Queen’s visit in 1977.
