Legal Aid NSW lawyers will be on hand in Moree to offer free legal advice to Aboriginal people with money worries, trouble with fines, housing problems and other legal issues.

“We can offer advice about a whole range of everyday legal issues, from debts and utility bills, to phone contracts and Centrelink problems, to funeral insurance, fines and payday loans,” senior Legal Aid NSW lawyer Jemima McCaughan said.
Legal Aid NSW lawyers can also offer independent legal advice about the NSW Stolen Generations Reparations Scheme.
The scheme provides compensation to survivors who were taken from their families by the Aborigines Welfare Board in the decades until 1969, in recognition of the immense pain and ongoing trauma caused by their forced removal.
“We are already working with a significant number of Stolen Generations survivors to help them understand what compensation they are entitled to under this scheme,” Ms McCaughan said.
“These survivors have waited a lifetime for acknowledgment and compensation. We are here to support people through the application process, and offer independent advice about what their options might be if they are not eligible for the scheme.”
“We can also help people who are eligible for the scheme understand how compensation may affect other parts of their lives, and help them write a will so that after they’re gone, they can still take care of their families on their terms.”
Legal Aid NSW lawyers will be visiting these locations:
- Wednesday, September 13 – 12pm to 4pm at the Maayu Mali Rehabilitation Centre, 180 Greenbah Road, Moree
- Thursday, September 14 – 10am to 4pm at the Moree Aboriginal Legal Service, 47 Auburn Street, Moree
