Matthew Dahlstrom is facing one count of armed robbery and was formally refused bail in Inverell Local Court by Magistrate Michael O’Brien on Thursday morning.
Police allege the 35-year-old was armed when he stormed the Balo St supermarket just before 10pm on Wednesday.
“As a result the man [allegedly] took some tobacco and cigarettes before fleeing from the scene on foot,” Barwon Detective Inspector David Silversides said.
”It was excellent work by Moree police, the uniformed staff made the arrest very quickly after the alleged offence was committed.”
The 35-year-old was searched and detectives called in.
“The items alleged to have been stolen and a cutting weapon matching the description provided by the victim were allegedly seized in his possession,” Detective Inspector Silversides said.
“This was a very quick response, a very quick arrest and extremely positive outcome … an incident like this has a significant impact on the victims.”
A crime scene was set up and examined by specialist officers.
Now detectives are investigating if Dahlstrom was allegedly working alone.
“We’re still investigating the circumstances surrounding the arrest but at this stage we are still have some inquiries to make to whether he was alone,” Detective Inspector Silversides said.
Dahlstrom will remain behind bars until the case returns to court later this month.
