Pathfinders, a youth and family welfare service, is looking for people in Moree to sign up to become foster carers.
Pathfinders Foster Care Program’s Kim Smart said there is an urgent need for foster carers throughout the whole region, including Moree.
“There are more children than we have carers,” she said. “We like to have carers across the region because we like children to stay in their local community to keep their connections. We want to keep them close to home so kids can stay connected with their school and friends and extended family.”
Ms Smart said people from a range of backgrounds can apply to be a foster carer, from established families, retirees, and those without children.
“We’re looking for anyone with a big heart – you can be single, married, have your own house or be a renter,” she said.
There are a number of different fostering options such as respite, short or long-term care. Ms Smart said fostering a child can be a very rewarding experience.
“It has its challenges as well but at the end of the day you’re providing a safe environment for children who need it at the time,” she said
An information session was held in Moree last week and Pathfinders plan on holding another one in November for those interested. Call 1800 314 199 for more information.
