We have a high indigenous population, and a huge sporting community, so this is likely something most residents have spoken about at one stage or another.
Radio personality Alan Jones has ripped into the Sydney Swans star, denying the booing was race related.
“There are 71 indigenous players. They are in rugby league, they are in rugby union. They are everywhere. They’re playing tennis, and people don’t boo them,” Jones said.
Isn’t booing and heckling just one of those things Australians are known to do?
Go to any major footy game and listen to the crowd boo as the opposite team runs out of the sheds, or as the opposition goes to take a kick...
And isn’t it pretty obvious that the more people retaliate to the critics, the more reaction they receive in return.
There was a reaction to Goodes’ impression of throwing a spear recently, but how does that differ from GI performing the goanna after a try for the Rabbitohs?
The suggestion of Goodes hanging up the boots doesn’t seem like the solution.
How unsportsmanly... isn’t it?
Cultural divide is ashamedly one of our country’s biggest issues though.
Some are happy to take the niggling, and share in the laughs, being the butt of the joke - others not so much.
Despite it being one of our favorite antics, it’s probably best we consider how it would feel to be the other person.
