The purchase of Glen Orton, 1100 acres of degraded grazing land at Coolatai, in 2011 provided the opportunity to put her knowledge and skills into practice. Dominated by low-quality forage, primarily Coolatai grass, Judi has been using the principles of Holistic Management, grazing planning and land planning to regenerate the land and improve pasture quality.
“Grazing and rest are the primary tools used, with cattle moved frequently onto fresh paddocks,” Judi said.
Since taking over the management of Glen Orton many extended dry periods have been experienced, however, desirable native grasses are returning, soil health and biodiversity is improving and cattle production indicators are increasing.
“Still, finishing cattle has not been possible and being at the mercy of sale yard prices has been a challenge, which has prompted a review of marketing techniques.” Judi said.
“My goal is to demonstrate the capacity for cattle grazing the land in tune with natural cycles to restore health, vitality and productivity to the soil and pastures” Judi said.
The field day to be held on Friday 17 July will be the first opportunity to share Judi’s experience of being on Glen Orton.
Additional speakers include Glenn Morris, from Figtrees Organic Farms, who will speak on his experience marketing grass fed beef and Philippa Morris, ‘Peach Trees’ Graves-end, will introduce alternative marketing options for small scale producers.
“The afternoon will be spent in the paddock looking at low cost fencing and water options and local zoologist Alex Dudley will explain the importance of biodiversity and maintaining wildlife habitat.”
The day will start at 9am on Friday, July 17. Cost is $30 if paid before July 13 or $40 on the day, advance bookings would be helpful for catering.
