About 5pm on Tuesday a truck with an overmass load on the Newell Highway, north of Moree, was intercepted.
Upon inspection, officers found the vehicle to have exceeded the allowable mass limit.
Officers grounded the truck and issued a direction to reduce the load and a breach report which identified the truck as being almost 20 tonnes in excess of the allowable limit.
Traffic and highway patrol commander, Assistant Commissioner John Hartley, said police would continue to check, intercept, and ground trucks that exceeded weight limits.
"Any load that moves across NSW must be compliant with the set permits, which take into account key routes and traffic flow.
"Traffic and highway patrol officers, along with NSW Roads and Maritime inspectors are solely focused on enforcing compliance for the benefit of all road users.
"Those operators that continue to work outside permit conditions can expect to be intercepted, checked, and prosecuted where necessary," Assistant Commissioner Hartley said.
Roads and Maritime Services director of safety and compliance, Peter Wells, said the grounding was another example of operators being identified and removed from the road if they attempted to work outside the law.
“We know in moving oversize and overmass loads the good operators are highly skilled and careful in moving these very large loads. They focus strongly on safety and compliance with the law.
“We will focus our efforts on the few in this sector who do not operate in this manner to make the message clear – it will not be tolerated.
“These overmass loads must be transported according to the appropriate guidelines to ensure the safety of all road users,” he said.
