The concept, which was originally launched in Narrabri and now comprises a dozen towns in NSW and QLD, works as a gift card system.
Shoppers can ‘load-up’ at a number of participating stores (Assef’s, Dipper’s, Leading Appliances, Mitre 10, Moree Plains Shire Council and Tittle Tats at this stage) and can redeem the money at any shops participating with the promotion (A Tasty Surprise, Cafe Omega, Gwydir Graphics, Hill Fitzsimmons, Shoe Elegance, South Moree Butchery, Stephen Sparke Jewellers, La Maison Rose, She Loves Shoes, All About Lifestyle and Robin’s Nest for Children as well as those already listed).
Any business who is, or becomes, a financial member of the chamber can be involved with the program for free.
It’s already proving popular with $6000 loaded on to the cards last month, which is when they were released, only by word of mouth.
The cards are used on eftpos machines and can only be redeemed at participating stores, and must be used within 12 months.
You can also register the cards on the Why Leave Town website to keep track of the balance and to be sent a new card if you lose it. The minimum amount to be loaded on the cards is $50 with a $5000 maximum.
The chamber hopes aside from individuals, local businesses will use the cards as gifts or bonuses for employees, or as prizes rather than cash.
