COUNCIL is looking to lay the out the welcome mat for grey nomads and road-trippers by creating “friendly” parking locations for long vehicles, recreational vehicles (RV) and caravans around Moree.

Currently it is legal for these vehicles to stop in parallel parking areas provided them stay within traffic markers. But council is working with the Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia (CMCA) to get more information out to its members about where they can park in town and what businesses and facilities they will be able to access.
“To have parking area better identified and advertised, particularly near the CBD, is really important for tourism in our town,” Councillor Claudia Gall, who heads the Traffic Committee, said.
Five sites have already been approved with a sixth pending as council seeks to change parking from 45 degrees to parallel.
Council’s Director of Engineering Services Ian Dinham said that Moree has already been declared as a “RV Friendly Town” by the CMCA but that the new measures would make it more likely visitors extend their stay.
“The provision of short term parking for long vehicles such as RV’s, caravans, utilities with a trailer or small trucks within the Moree CBD area means it is much easier for drivers to access dump points and potable water, medical and pharmacy facilities and general shopping.”
The areas permissible for casual or daytime RV parking include: Balo Street between the Gwydir Street and Bridge Street (adjacent to Lyle Kirby Park) – Gwydir Street between Balo and Auburn Street – Auburn Street between Albert and Gwydir Street – the open space adjacent to Bank Street (dry weather only) – Frome Street opposite Kirkby Park – Alice Street near the Tourist Information Centre.
