But they were not to be denied this afternoon, running away comprehensive 36-10 victors over a gallant Glen Innes.
Coach, Stan Smith, said his players used last year's 26-22 loss to Armidale as motivation.
"They didn't want to do it twice in a row," he said.
"They played for one another, got a good start and we said at half-time we couldn't relax because they were going to come back at us."
The Boomies' hit the ground running to race out to an early 18-0 lead after winger Richard Simpson got things started with an 85-metre intercept in the fifth minute.
Centre Trevor Tighe finished with a hat-trick, while Tyrell Smith scored a double as the home side took a 22-4 lead to the break.
