Kiama Rotary member and paramedic at Wollongong hospital, Lloyd Chatfield, was told due to upgrades there would be medical equipment no longer in use at Wollongong.
He spoke with his fellow Kiama Rotary members and they decided to donate the equipment to different medical facilities all over NSW.
Pius was chosen to receive five ear, nose and throat (ENT) endoscopes to help professor Paul Fagan and his team of consultants from St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney who travel to Moree every six to eight weeks.
Pius unit manager, Therese Sullivan, said during their visit to Moree the team of consultants see more than 25 patients.
“Before we received the ENT endoscopes, the medical professionals would have to manually look through whilst holding the scope down the ear, nose or throat which was quite uncomfortable for both the patient and consultant,” she said.
The new ENT endoscopes have an adjustable camera head, a light source and can be visualised on a screen.
“The equipment gives a more up-to-date and accurate experience, and it makes it easier for the consultants to explain things to their patients,” Ms Sullivan said.
The equipment was delivered by Wes Macpherson who, through family ties, was asked to make the slow, 10 hour trip to make sure nothing was broken or damaged.
“Kiama rotary members were informed that Pius was expanding their services and decided the equipment would be put to good use in Moree,” he said.
Ms Sullivan thanked prior travelling ENT specialist, Kelvin Kong, who recommended Pius.
“We have a lot of children and adults who utilise the ENT service and the reason why we provide the service is so locals do not have to travel for an appointment,” she said.
