The Suns registered their first ever victory in the tournament, winning two of their three 14-a-side matches, with their sole loss coming by just three points, and narrowly missed out on a chance in the final only due to percentage.
They opened the day with a 36-7 win over hosts the Narrabri Eagles, then narrowly going down to the Tamworth Swans 31-28 before the day finished on a high with their first ever win over the New England Nomads in a 53-35 victory.
The side was sitting in equal second after their three round robin games but due to their superior percentage the Gunnedah Bulldogs made it through to the final, going on to beat the Swans by one point to take out the tournament.

Suns coach Eric Faulkner was absolutely thrilled with the way the side played in their first competitive footy for the year.
"There were a lot of positives. They stuck to the structures that we've been practising," he said.
"Everyone followed the team rules that we set earlier in the year. Everyone put in 100 percent, there were no passengers."
"The first timers went really well. I think we had five first timers that had never played the game before and we had six juniors play that didn't miss a beat and didn't look like they weren't meant to be there."
Faulkner said his side had a slow start in their loss to the Swans, but were able to learn from that and come out ready for their final game.
"In game three they came out firing, Nomads had no answer for us," he said.
"They were probably the best team on the day, but once we came out they had no answers."
The Suns also entered a team into the women's cup and despite not registering a win, seven new players took to the field for the first time for an overall successful day.
The Inverell Saints went on to win the women's tournament.
The Suns men will be training hard for the next three weeks as they get ready for a very tough season opener against reigning premiers Inverell Saints.
