Up to 120 shooters from around NSW and Queensland are expected to turn up to the Moree Gun Club shooting range for the prestigious competition.
“It’s the fifth time the Golden Clay has been hosted at Moree,” sharpshooter Dimity Boydell said.
“Our major sponsor David Benn from David Benn Fine Jewellery gives a golden clay to the overall winner and a silver one to the winner of each grade.”

Shooters will compete for the total prize pool worth $5,000 across the weekend.
On Saturday, they will compete at the 50 Target Namoi Cotton Double Barrel, 50 Dukes and Sons Tires Single Barrel and 25 Target NSW Western Zone Knight Championship Single Barrel.
The competition will roll over into Sunday, and competitors will shoot in the 50 Target Tom Boydell Memorial Point Score and 50 Target Frank O’Neill Trophy Handicap.
Boydell noted the Golden Clay was set a part from other competitions because of its prestige.
“Probably the fact that you can win the golden clay, is what makes it unique. You can wear the golden clay on your jacket, and it’s a nice keepsake to have.”
It’s a prize that Boydell hopes to keep in Moree this year – something that hasn’t happened since the inception of the competition.
“The first three years, the prize went to one shooter. It was only last year that Tony Ryder unseated the reigning champion. Let’s hope the prize keeps changing hands,” she said.
The competition comes amid forecasts for wet and unpleasant weather.
“The shooting competition will go on no matter what: rain, hail or shine. There is plenty of hot food being prepared for the weekend, so that should keep us warm,” Boydell said.
