It’s almost been four years since GTK Crossfit opened in Moree, and since then the booming box has gone from strength to strength- literally.
Owner Heidi Dell said the decision to host a local throwdown would hopefully encourage more boxes throughout the region to follow suit.
“The end goal is to maybe start more of a regional throwdown and have one competition in each town. Basically the event gives athletes a place to get together and have a competition meet where you can not only compete against each other but also meet other people from the Crossfit community,” Dell said.
Around 80 people from Tamworth, Inverell, Gunnedah and Moree have registered for the local throwdown where teams of four (two males, two females) complete three workouts on the day, accumulating points for a final result.
There are two different divisions: RX for the elite athletes and scaled for the beginners and intermediates, to ensure all athletes can compete in the competition.
“We chose the workouts based on a variety of different things; cardio, gymnastic movements and weight lifting movements have been put together in different formats,” Dell said.
Local businesses such as Greg and Wendy Woods (Field Service Plant Repairs), Diesel Gas Engineering, Payne Electrical, Tourism Moree and many others have generously given GTK Crossfit donations for the huge prize pool.
Each division will have a first, second and third place. The prizes give plenty of incentive to place high with cash, protein, Blue Dinosaur Paleo Bars and hampers from Tourism Moree up for grabs.
“Tourism Moree and the Moree Artesian Aquatic Centre have given every entered athlete a free pass to the hot pool which is great because a few of the travelling competitors are staying the night,” she said.
The third and final workout will be released this week as registrations close.
