The prize will round out the Gallery’s 2017 exhibition program by offering artists the chance to show off their hard work and potentially win some money.
Gallery director, Vivien Clyne, says the exhibition continues a long standing tradition of art prizes at Moree Plains Gallery.
“Throughout the Gallery’s history there have been several art prizes run by the Friends of the Gallery,” she said.
“Some people in town might remember the People of the Black Soil Plains exhibitions which saw many local artworks enter the Gallery’s collection.
“Art prizes are a fantastic way for artists to show off their hard work and we are excited that this year we can offer cash prizes.”
The Moree Portrait Prize is open to people of all ages and working in all artistic mediums.
“We really want to encourage artists and students to think outside the square when planning their entries,” Ms Clyne said.
“Portraits can be made in a range of media from sculpture and collage to painting and drawing. Photography is also a fantastic way to enter a prize like this. Taking selfies is so common these days but you might not think of them as self-portraits that could be artworks in their own right.”
As well as self-portraits, Gallery staff are keen to see a range of faces represented in the prize.
“There is no requirement that the portraits entered must be of local people,” Ms Clyne said.
“We’d love to see artists representing celebrities or politicians as well as their own family and friends.”
The Moree Portrait Prize offers cash prizes for the following categories:
- Under 12s $200
- Under 18s $300
- Adults $500
- People’s Choice $500
- Grand Jury Prize $1,000
Entries are open now and close on Friday, November 24.
The exhibition will open on Friday, December 8 and run until Friday, December 22.
