A men’s health day was organised at the local office themed around “good physical health improves mental health and wellbeing”.
Barber Rachel Smith of Stagg and Co and Amcal Pharmacy staff were on hand to help the men feel and look better.
Flourish manager Claire Gillan said male mental health workers Jarrod Cutmore and Bruce Jones suggested hosting the day to put a spotlight on issues that don’t get talked about every day.
“Men don’t often open up easily and speak about their issues; especially around physical and mental health.
“Particularly in our culture men don’t visit the doctor regularly or see health professionals so this men’s health day was a starting point to improving their physical health,” she said.
Amcal Pharmacy were providing blood pressure tests, basic blood tests and information surrounding diabetes, weight loss and voicing a range of assistance available in store.
Meanwhile, Rach had her clippers in hand creating signature looks for the men.
“We had someone chat with the men about respecting women from a domestic violence angle because it is a big ticket item in our community. It was a general chat with the men telling them to stand up for women if they ever see any form of DV,” she said. Ms Gillan said the team hoped the check up, haircut and new information would spark change in each participant.
“Change starts when a person feels better about them self so we are hoping these small physical changes will help them change their mental state,” she said.
