In its 11th year, the golf day boasted windy conditions for the four-person Ambrose.
Moree Veterans Golf president Guy Roberts said this year’s funds would again support the local cancer support group and something a little different.
“Some of the money will go towards the hospital to fund a new birthing bath,” he said.
Roberts said golfers had travelled from Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and up into QLD to attend the day.
Many participants purchased tickets in the raffle going in the draw to win a $1000 travel voucher from M and G Travel Moree.
“Over the 11 years we have raised close to $50,000 for the Moree Cancer Support Group and the best thing is, its all stayed local,” he said.
Roberts described Ken as a well-known and well-liked farmer East of Moree.
“He did enjoy his golf,” Roberts said.
Ken’s wife, Joclyn teed off on Thursday with their three sons Michael, Paul and Cameron.
“It is a great honour to have so many people supporting the day,” she said.
“When John (Gourley) first proposed we have a charity golf day I said yes but only if it goes towards something and we’ve taken on the cancer support group each year.”
As Gourley and Slack were good friends, he has been a core organiser each year.
“Ken was a keen golfer but he wasn’t the best in the world.
“When he had lung cancer we were at the coast for treatment and he used to break his neck to get back home on Thursday to play golf with his mates,” Joclyn said.
Ken was everyone’s friend, was always happy and an outgoing kind of bloke.
Trophies were awarded to the first, second and third placed teams, for the mens and ladies long drive and ladies teams.
