It’ll be no laughing matter when the Croppa Creek Crows, Moree Bulls, Inverell Highlanders, Warialda Wasps, Robb College and Cunnamulla Dingos clash on April 1.
The Crows will host their well-known gala day to not only kick off the rugby union season but also raise money for the small community of Croppa Creek.
Crows’ Drew Hawkins said each team will place twice on Saturday and the highest point scorers will face off in the final.
“It’ll be a great day with plenty to watch. Players will take the field for a 15-man game with two 30 minute halves,” he said.
Half way between the great rural rugby towns of Goondiwindi and Moree lies the Crows home ground ‘Crow Park’.
Where farmers, workers and the odd agronomist come together each week to train.
‘Crow Park’ is situated directly behind the Croppa Creek Bowling Club. Hawkins encouraged everyone to attend the day.
“The bigger crowd we have, the better the day will be and the more funds we can raise for Croppa Creek.”
There will be free entry, an all-day barbecue and later on there will be live music and dinner available at the club.
While the club celebrates many years of a strong community presence, there was 12 years where there just wasn't a team to be found.
In 2014 the first Croppa Creek crows gala day was held, motivated by an extended dry spell not unlike 1994, heralding in the second generation of Crows.
"We started the club up again because it was a dry year and a lot of people were looking for something to do, but can't commit to full time football and training in town with the kind of work they do," Rowen Tighe said in 2016.
"One of the great points of the crows is meeting new young farmers in the district and getting to meet each other socially," said Crow Andrew Gillan.
"We try and keep the traditions of the Old Crows alive.
"It's really good to see how we have such a young community thriving in the area.”
The crowd is encouraged to head down around 11.30am before the official kick off time of 12pm.
