Seventeen-year-old Jess Towns was offered the opportunity through her school at the end of last year.
The New England Girls’ School (NEGS) student said she had been riding horses from two years old.
“I put my name down because I’m thinking about riding overseas in my gap year next year, so I thought this would be a great opportunity to see what it’s like before hand,” she said.
During her trip, Towns will meet the team coach for the US equestrian team, visit champion stables, undergo sessions with equestrian specialists and tour a world-class study farm.
She hopes to learn more about US equestrian competitions during the two-week stay.
“The study farm will be interesting; I’m looking forward to finding out more about it.
“Competitions in the US are at a much higher standard so it will also be good to learn how we can improve over here in Australia,” Towns said.
While abroad, the group will visit a few landmarks and learn more about the country’s culture and history.
Former Olympian and NBC commentator Imtiaz Anees has coordinated the trip, after taking on the role of head of NEGS equestrian.
“The girls will witness cutting-edge technical skills from experts in everything from horse nutrition, to horse sports to equine science.
“We are also lucky enough to secure a meeting with the CEO of America’s best known restaurant chain, Mr Dan Cathy. He will give the girls insight into what it takes to run a world-class corporation”, Mr Anees said.
He hoped the tour would put NEGS equestrian on the international map and expose students to potential career options.
Towns undergoes weekly lessons at NEGS and represents the school most weekends at competitions.
“My main event is showjumping but I participate in all disciplines.
“I am excited and so grateful to my Mum and Dad for allowing me to go,” she said.
Meanwhile, NEGS will hold a ‘Meet the Principal’ event at Moree Women's Club on March 29 from 5-7pm for all to attend.
