About 200 budding cricketers participated in the day, helping to raise much-needed funds for the McGrath Foundation.
Moree Junior Cricket Association was lucky enough to secure former Australian opening batsman Rick McCosker as a special guest on the day.
McCosker played 25 Tests and 14 One Day Internationals for Australia between 1975 and 1982 and is well remembered for continuing to play in the 1977 Centenary Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, despite having his jaw broken by a bouncer off Bob Willis in the first innings.
President David Watts said McCosker was a hit with the kids, despite the generational gap.
“Rick was fantastic, he walked around and involved himself in the games with the kids,” he said.
“The kids who were not even alive when Rick played for Australia thoroughly enjoyed having him here.”
McCosker, originally from Inverell, was more than happy to volunteer his time for the cause.
“He really enjoyed it; he was impressed with the way our club is run and the talent of our kids,” Watts said.
For $1 a ball the kids had the chance to bowl at McCosker and if they were lucky enough to get him out they won a prize donated by Assefs Moree.
A barbecue was also held on the day and all funds raised will be split between the McGrath Foundation and Moree Hospital’s Palliative Care unit.
At the time of going to print, Moree Junior Cricket Association was unable to confirm a total figure but Watts said they were pleased with the day.
“We are happy with the day as we sold out of everything,” he said.
“It is great that we could help raise funds for two very worthy charities.”
Moree Junior Cricket Association would like to thank Bec Reardon for organising the barbecue and games, and Moree Bakehouse, Woolworths Moree and Assefs Moree for their generous support and to everyone who donated towards the cause.
Money raised through Pink Stumps Day events helps place McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities around Australia, making a real difference to families experiencing breast cancer.
