At their recent annual general meeting last week, the zone threw its support behind the introduction of a full field 7s competition to run in conjunction with the Central North senior competitions.
The competition has been on the horizon for a couple of years and several clubs have indicated they are interested in fielding sides.
Moree Rugby Union Club supports the push to include women in next year’s Central North Rugby Union competition.
“We think it’s a great idea and will be much better for the zone if we can involve women as well,” Moree Rugby Union Club president Paul King said.
“It’s another way forward for the zone to give rugby a higher profile in the community.
“It’s definitely a great idea to try and promote the game as much as possible.”
At this stage, all clubs in the Central North zone are on side with the idea of a women’s 7s competition, although there are several logistics still to be finalised such as age divisions.
Moree Rugby Union Club will be discussing the idea and gauging interest at their upcoming AGM.
With a number of talented young players in town such as NSW rugby 7s representative Ashleigh Walker and her teammates from the Moree Secondary College open girls rugby 7s team, who made it to the state finals this year, King said he his hopeful that enough women will be interested to form two Moree teams next year.
“There’s some good young players out there,” King said.
“I think we can find the numbers, especially with the school having a side.
“We’ll be trying to promote it as much as we can. We want more people involved and the greater spectrum across the community we can get, the better off we are.”
As a further sign of the growing interest in women’s rugby, the zone will also support the entry of a Central North women’s team in the Country 7s Championships in April and 15s Championships.
